One of the original pioneers in the sport of triathlon, John was the youngest competitor in the first triathlon ever held in the Northeast back in 1982. Prior to that he played competitive hockey and raced BMX bicycles. By 1984, John was already clinching the title of overall winner at multiple triathlon events and eventually earned professional status in 1987 while at Providence College. At the age of 24, he competed in his first Hawaii Ironman finishing with a time of 9:20 in 1989.
He would go on to compete in more than 300+ triathlons. In over 50 of these events, he achieved first place overall honors. After a hiatus John returned to triathlon as a master’s age group triathlete and finished 4th overall in the 2009 Hawaii Ironman 45-49 age division. Additionally he was the first American finisher.
John has also competed over the years in long distance open water races, 24 hour ski and bicycle races, numerous road races and duathlons formerly known as biathlons. John is no stranger to race related travel and his vast experience is a tremendous asset to Challenger Tours and our clients. He lives just south of Boston with his wife and two children.
